Throughout Torre, you’ll find decorative elements inspired by and created in Mexico. One of our most prominent displays is our wall of Sugar Skulls. Though colorful and beautiful, we also love to share the history of these hand-painted sculptures.
In Mexico, families celebrate Día de los Muertos, or “Day of the Dead” every year in November. “All Saints Day” on November 1 and “All Souls Day” on November 2 allow families to remember and celebrate the lives of those who have passed away. It is a vibrant holiday that honors the lives of lost loved ones with colorful and joyous celebrations.
This celebration often includes the creation of handmade Sugar Skulls, so named for their original medium. In the 18th century when Mexico was abundant in sugar production, families would mold these decorative skulls out of sugar. Though our skulls at Torre are crafted of ceramic, each one is hand-painted by artisans in Mexico.
We encourage our guests to enjoy the Sugar Skulls and the celebratory spirit that they represent. Look out for more representations of Sugar Skulls throughout Torre, including ones that you can take home with you!
